Meet Our July CurlFriend

1. What’s your name and where are you from?

Hello my name is Florence, but you can call me Flo! I’m a military brat so I don’t claim any where, but I reside in Atlanta, Georgia.

2. How long have you been natural? Why did you decide to begin your natural hair journey? And did you Big Chop or Transition?

I have been natural since 2008. I decided to take my natural hair journey because I was ready to accept myself as God made me. My hair was straight when I was younger, I didn’t start getting a curl pattern until I hit puberty. I really didn’t understand what was going on.  I staightened it all the time to fit in. After I got my first relaxer, I was also disappointed that my hair was still curly, so instead of fighting it, I chose to embrace it and learn as much as I can about caring for my hair. I transitioned my hair for a year with braid and twist-outs and cut inches every couple of months.

4. What is your go-to hair style?
My go to hair style has to be a wash&go using the shingling method.

5. What is the one product that you cannot live without? Why?
Omg this is so hard b/c I’m a product junkie but if I had to choose it would be Moisture Love Gentle Embrace Hydrating Shampoo. It’s a other-worldly cleanser that cleanses and de-tangles my hair! Sometimes I skip conditioner after using because this one product does both!

6. What advice would you give to a Curlfriend who has just begun her natural hair journey?
Step 1: Stop mistreating your hair with heat. I would stop heat all together and focus on getting a protein and moisture balance in your hair.

Step 2: Get a routine going that caters to your hair needs and stick with it for a month or 2. See what works and what doesn’t and make adjustments from there.

Step 3: Trim or cut off damaged hair that can’t be repaired. There is no point of hanging on to hair that isn’t healthy.

Remember to be patient!! If you stick with it you’ll see results!!
