1. What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Toia B. and I’m from Brooklyn, NY by way of Barbados, W. I.
2. How long have you been natural? Why did you decide to begin your natural hair journey? And did you Big Chop or Transition?
I began my natural hair journey in 2009. My husband had been encouraging me to wear my hair in its natural state for years. One day, as I was giving myself a relaxer touch-up, he walked by and chuckled that I was fanning my head to somehow ease the burning going on in my scalp! LOL! He said, “I dunno why you women do this to yourselves! Just wear your hair the way it is!” He was right and that was the last time I relaxed my hair. I transitioned for about 8 months before I got tired of dealing with the two textures (because I had no idea what I was doing!) and cut off my relaxed ends.
3. Who is your hair crush/hair inspiration?
I wouldn’t say I really have a hair crush but I do admire women like Chizi Duru, Whitney Madueke, and others like them who proudly rock kinky fros in their completely natural state, showing the world that tight coils are just as beautiful as curls and twist-outs.
4. What is your go-to hair style?
This is a tough one! I guess I would say the high puff is my quick go-to since I have a 3-year old and I get quite busy. But I also love a high bun and my old braid-out/chunky fro when I have some time to do something.
5. What is the one product that you cannot live without? Why?
I’m not sure I really have one fave but one that readily comes to mind is Alikay Naturals Shea Yogurt Moisturizer. When its paired with the Lemongrass Leave-In, I have one of the best moisturizing duos. My hair is so soft and smells great!
6. What advice would you give to a Curlfriend who has just begun her natural hair journey?
Patience is key! Don’t make the mistake of comparing your journey to others. By taking the time to learn your hair and being consistent with your regimen, your hair can and will reach its fullest potential.
7. How can we connect with you?
I’m ToBNatural all over social media (IG, Facebook, Twitter) and you can also find my hair tips and tricks at LuvToBNatural.com!
